Consider that summer's day when you could not step into your conservatory because it felt like a greenhouse. Or the winter evening you had to wear three jumpers to sit in there for half an hour! These scenarios are unfortunately common for many homeowners in the UK who have spent a fortune on conservatory extensions but are unable to use them for most of the year.
At Smart Conservatory Solutions, we have listened to these stories repeatedly from clients throughout the country. They appreciate having conservatories, but like so many people, they cannot make the most out of them without an insulated roof.
Let’s focus on what is truly important: managing the temperature. Both polycarbonate and glass conservatories combine to form a temperature nightmare. During the summer, they trap heat, sometimes more than 60 degrees Celsius while in winter they allow heat to escape at an alarming rate.
This is where an insulated roof makes the most significant difference. The multi-layered insulation system functions as a thermal barrier in all seasons. Rather than allowing summertime heat to come into the house, it instead bounces off. While in winter, the desired warmth is retained inside the home.
Many people are already aware that energy costs have increased significantly; however, not many know most homeowners find themselves in a losing financial battle during winter months as multifaceted roofing systems of conservatories cause them to bleed money. The enormous investment made in heating these spaces does not reflect the amount of cash generated due to the poorly insulated roofs.
Most conservatory and extension roofs are manufactured using lightweight materials which have minimal thermal resistance. This type of construction virtually guarantees 0.15 W/m²K U-values, which in normal speech means that they provide “excellent insulation.” The amount of energy needed to maintain comfortable temperatures for is extremely low to achieve. For instance, one of our customers claimed that his roof-conversion accompanied by the installation of modern insulated roofing systems was able supress his heating costs during winter. Mainly down to our superior thermal efficiency - which brought overall temperature to almost an equal par as compared to the rest of the house.
Having a non-glaring roof is not the only advantage. It’s a known fact that conservatory roofs make it impossible to use computers, phones, tablets or even watch TV without dealing with serious eye strain on sunny days. Being unable to see due to high levels of glare makes it very difficult for a human to focus and causes headaches.
Harsher glare caused by sunlight is eliminated when insulated roofs are used. The side windows in the conservatory enable natural light to enter without overly intrusive glare, making it easy to complete routine tasks.
Have you paused to think about the noise while sipping on a quiet cup of tea during heavy rainfall with a glass or polycarbonate roof? The noise alone can make anything close to relaxing simply impossible.
This type of roof also acts as a form of noise pollution control. The multi-layered pattern absorbs sound, transforming your noisy conservatory into a fully peaceful extension regardless of what the weather throws at it.
One client from the rainy part of the UK was able to best describe it when they said, “It’s like someone turned down the volume on the weather.” This client also said how their reading nook had been an abandoned area of the house during showers, but now it's become their favourite spot to read.
It’s no secret that conservatory roofs are going to take a beating over time. Panels will become stained and discoloured while seals begin wearing out. The truth is not if you will face problems, but when.
Shielded roof systems outperform the competition when it comes to dreadful weather. Instead of leaks, wear and tear, there will be little to no issues when it comes to maintenance. The roof will be much more reliable than standard roofs.
The insulated conservatory roof offers comfort, but it also allows you to get back to the space you've paid for but haven’t been able to use fully. Once you think about the extra comfort, savings on energy costs, and even value added to the property, your primary question changes from “Can I afford this?” to “How can I afford not to?”.
If you find yourself exhausted because a given room is only comfortable during the limited good weather Britain gives a few times a year, then maybe you should consider the considerable difference an insulated roof can make. Especially when our tiles have up to a 50-year manufacturers guarantee! Check out our tiled conservatory roof options.
